Shear Vixen : Brigitte Bardot
Brigitte Bardot was one of the best-known sex symbols of the 1960s. The model/actress/”singer” captivated fans with her signature, sultry style. Brigitte’s tousled tresses are timeless, and for that, we salute her.

Shear Vixen : Jean Seberg in "Breathless"
“Breathless” was Jean Luc Goddard’s first feature film, released in 1960. The classic is recognized for it’s progressive visual style. Jean Seberg’s bold haircut was as influential on hair as the film was on French New Wave. We salute Seberg for proving super short hair can be extremely chic.

Tutorial Tuesday : Maiden Braidin'
1. If your hair needs added texture, you can use a dry shampoo. This will make the teasing part a lot easier. Spray at your roots, lifting as you go. Wait a minute or two and comb it through, or else you’ll be left with a powdery mess. 2. Then, divide your hair into two sections, like you’re doing a half-updo. Back comb underneath the top half and smooth over the top. This will give...

Trend Alert : A French Revolution
This season’s sumo bun is the french twist with edge. The key to pulling off this look, without looking too much like a walk-of-shame ad, is to pair it with a cute hair accessory. The look is loose and unrefined, giving the style way more chic cred than ever before.

Tutorial Tuesday: The Braid Parade
It seems pretty easy, but it’s not. Not everyone has long hair that reaches all the way around the head to make a perfect crown of braids. Girls with short hair need braids TOO! Using this technique, you make small, overlapping intersections of braids to create a full crown. Here’s how: Start with straight, wavy or curly hair. We personally like this best with a little wave or curl because...

Crisis Averted: Managing Rainy Weather Hair
Rainy weather can put a big damper on your hairstyle. Though your first inclination might be just to pull your hair in a ponytail and put on a baseball cap, that’s not always possible. Don’t fret — your hair can still look amazing even on wet, rainy days. If the weather outside is frightful and you have a special date or other important event to attend, follow these tips to...

Fashion Friday: The Backless Dress
It’s Friday, which means we’re talking fashion. Today’s topic is the backless dress. The most important thing is to see the dress on. Once it’s on the body, you almost know instantly whether hair should be up or down. It all depends on how low the cut is in back. There are two different worlds when it comes to the backless dress. There’s the backless dress and then there’s the PLUNGING backless...

Tutorial Tuesday: Music Fest Hair
Music festivals like SXSW, Coachella + Bonnaroo not only bring out the serious sound, but the serious style as well. We’ve seen more types of braids at these festivals than we even knew existed. Our current favorite is this mamma jamma right here. It’s just a regular braid, but instead of taking 3 equal sized pieces like you do in a normal braid, you just make one piece smaller than the other 2....

Fashion Friday: The Anatomy of a Clutch
We all know what it’s like to stuff everything we possibly can into a small bag at the last second. Let’s try and avoid that. In this post we’re trying to keep you from a tight squeeze. ONE: Go to a department store and ask the sales person for a sample of your favorite perfume. Tuck that into the corner along with some bobby pins for any hair mishaps that may occur. You could even wrap them...

Trend Alert : Rockabilly Revival
50s inspired looks with a hint of androgyny are generating a lot of buzz this season. Designers like Jeremy Scott (left) and Proenza Schouler (right) interpreted the trend in several different ways. We love the look but is it wearable off the runway?

Tutorial Tuesday: Pin Up, Girl
This may seem like a simple task to some of you, but we find that a lot of people struggle with hiding a bobby pin. The best way to conceal your weapon is to slide the pin back up into the hair in the opposite direction that the hair is going (see image example). By doing this, you create the strongest support while hiding your bobby pin at the same time.  As wedding/prom season quickly...

Shear Pleasure: Time For A Haircut?
On of our most frequently asked questions is, ”How long until I come back in to get my cut touched up?” Every time we cut someone’s hair, we discuss the “expiration date” with them on their way out the door. Because every single haircut is different. You cannot generalize all haircuts with a 6-8 week time period. Here’s our basic breakdown… Short cropped hair: 4-6 weeks. Super short (pixie)...

Tutorial Tuesday: Short Hair Affair
YES… spring has sprung! That means fresh, new short cuts will be on the rise. So many of our clients have been on a mission to go shorter this year and the very first thing we tell them is: short hair is all about learning different textures! It’s really easy to find updos, styles, braids + buns for longer hair lengths but not usually so easy for girls with mid-length hair or shorter. Here’s the...

This post will be a great visual for someone who’s learning to extend the life of their blowdry. Here are some step-by-step suggestions to go with the images above… Day 1, (not pictured) is always smooth + easy. No issues there. Congratulations! You pretty much have free-reign on hair when wearing a strapless, so this is a great time to try fun new flirty hair styles! Chignon or bun: Try to keep it back and show your neck or have it slightly off to one side. It’s important not to crowd the neck with chignons because...

Tutorial Tuesday: Short & Sweet
This style is a quick & simple! TOOLS: bobby pins, accessory, hairspray. Prep: You’ll want the hair to have some texture before you pin it up. If you have curly hair, you’re all set. If not, use a 1″ spring iron and curl everything away from your face so it will twist easier. Then it’s just 2 steps! Take the entire left side and start twisting near your ear. Best to twist it kind of tight...

Fashion Friday : The One-Shoulder Dress
Today’s topic is the one-shoulder dress. Whether it’s long or short, the point of a one-shoulder dress is to show a little skin! Hair should almost always take the back seat to the featured shoulder. If you pull your hair over the bare shoulder, you might as well be wearing a dress that covers both shoulders. Let that shoulder show and throw on some earrings for some sparkle! Try wearing your...

Tutorial Tuesday: Bang Bang!
Always blow out your bangs while your hair is super wet. The sooner you blow dry them out of the shower, the better the result will be. Hair is most cooperative and flexible before it air dries. Using  your blow dryer with the nozzle attached and a paddle brush shift everything all the way to one side. Make sure to get warm air into the root. That will help you manipulate any unwanted...

Pin Purge
Not all bobby pins are the same. Go through your stash. Test what you’ve got. If you pull them apart gently and they stay apart, you need new bobby pins. They should be strong enough to stay closed. If  they’re not, you’ll have a harder time getting your updo to stay! The stronger they are, the less you’ll need. This is a little tip that goes a long way. Courtesy of The Beauty Department

Braid Brigade
The only real secret to braiding is patience. And while it can take some serious time to really perfect “the plait” (as our friends from across the pond like to call it), there is one thing that we always depend on when doing braided hair styles on our girls… Redken Rough Paste. The words paste + pomade may seem a lil’ sketch at first, but this has been our secret weapon in the war on clean hair...
